『花子シリーズ:あじさい// HANAKO Series: Hydrangeas』

This was a piece I had made in 2021 as a redraw of an old 2017 sketch I had a hard time completing prior.

In the language of flowers they say hydrangeas have many different meanings ranging from abundance, heartfelt emotion, gratitude, and boastfulness, with each interpretation rooted in cultural history, beliefs, and narratives. In Japanese culture, the association with apologies originates from a specific legend surrounding the flower.

For me this piece is almost a love letter and apology to my younger self. As an artist we have many self-doubts and we beat ourselves up over it. This represents all the hard work and effort put in to had gotten to that point in my life. How much I’ve bloomed despite my struggles.

It’s been a couple years since I completed this piece, and even now I’m still learning and growing- I still look back at this piece very fondly…
